Music Theory Certificate

The Music Theory Certificate program is designed to train students to be future worship leaders and musicians by providing them with knowledge and concepts in the field of music theory and musicianship.

This one-year certificate program will enable students to develop, integrate, and hone their musical talents for the purpose of contributing to a world revolutionized by Christian mission through music ministry.

Students working towards their Music Theory Certificate will be required to complete 24 quarter units under 2 categories: Music Theory and Musicianship. The program length is 12 months.

Course Description

MT101 Music Theory I: Scales and Rhythm: The course activity includes major and minor scales in the F and G clefs, and rhythmic notations and drills involving simple and compound meter.

MT102 Music Theory II: Harmony:F ollowing MT101, the study expands to triads and inversion, dominant sevenths and inversions and some secondary dominants and sing-and-play drills involving the same harmonic material.

MT103 Music Theory III: Advanced Rhythm and Harmony: Concentrating on expanding musicianship skills through drills and performance exercises with longer and more complex rhythmic patterns and harmony.

MT104 Music Theory IV: Melody and Chord Progression: Studies in diatonic harmony. Topics include primary and secondary triads and seventh chords, their inversions, non-harmonic tones, secondary dominants and seventh chords and their inversions, harmonic sequences and melodic analysis

MU101-104 Ear Training & Sight-singing (2): Sight-singing and dictation drills involving in the training materials introduced in theory classes.
